PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing Houttuynia cordata-derived caffeic acid is provided to suppress topoisomerase I activity. CONSTITUTION: A topoisomerase I inhibitor contains Houttuynia cordata-derived caffeic acid as an active ingredient. A method for preparing caffeic acid comprises: a step of isolating Houttuynia cordata with methanol to obtain a first extract; a step of dissolving the first extract in a mixture solvent of distilled water and butanol and drying a butanol layer to obtain a second extract; and a step of performing chromatography of the second extract with hexane and ethylacetate.
