A nuclear reactor containment vessel (3) has an inner shell (17) covering a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (2), and also has an outer shell (18) forming an outer well (19) which is the airtight space covering the horizontal outer periphery of the inner shell (17). The inner shell (17) has a first cylindrical sidewall (4a) which surrounds the horizontal periphery of the nuclear reactor pressure vessel (2), an upper lid (6) which covers the upper part of the nuclear reactor pressure vessel (2), and a first top slab (5a) which connects in an airtight manner the periphery of the upper lid (6) and the upper end of the first cylindrical sidewall (4a). The outer shell (18) has a second cylindrical sidewall (4b) which surrounds the outer periphery of the first cylindrical sidewall (4a), and also has a second top slab (5b) which connects in an airtight manner the vicinity of the upper end of the second cylindrical sidewall (4b) and the first cylindrical sidewall (4a). In an accident of the nuclear reactor, without relying on an external power source, the release of particulate radioactive materials to the environment can be prevented and the pressure in the nuclear reactor containment vessel can be limited to a design pressure or below. |
