The steering device (1) comprises a steering handle (2) and a hydraulic drive (3) for varying an angular position of a wheel (4) of the motor vehicle. A temperature sensor (5) is provided for direct or indirect determination of a temperature value of a hydraulic fluid of the hydraulic drive. A sensor (6) is provided for direct or indirect determination of pressure of the hydraulic fluid of the hydraulic drive. An evaluation unit (7) determines a characteristic quantity for the volume or a change in the volume of hydraulic fluid from the temperature value and the pressure. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an operating state of a steering device for a motor vehicle.
