Fused silica fabrics with a maximum diameter of 50 microns are given a thin coating of thermally deposited boron nitride. The silica fibre is heated to from 600 DEG C. to 1100 DEG C. and at a pressure below 2 mm. of mercury, is treated with boron trichloride and ammonia introduced through separate inlet openings in the reaction chamber. Coatings are normally less than 1000 Angstrom units. |
