The device has an optical sensor (2) comprising a photodiode line for detecting a surface image of a workpiece (10). An Illumination unit illuminates a surface (6) of the work piece, and a sensor-positioning- and -adjusting device positions and adjusts the sensor relative to the surface of the workpiece. The positioning and adjusting device has a sensor rotation unit for rotating the sensor around a rotational axis so that angular orientation (4) of the photodiode line changes relative to the surface during rotation of the photodiode line around the rotational axis. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting structure of a surface of a cylinder bore and a piston of a workpiece.
