<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detection accuracy by making the light receiving amount of each light receiving element uniform. <P>SOLUTION: A reflecting type encoder 100 comprises: a rotation disc 110 disposed so as to rotate about a rotation axis AX, and formed with an incremental pattern IP and first and second serial absolute patterns AP1 and AP2 in a circumferential direction; a light source 130; incremental light receiving elements 140L and 140R including a plurality of incremental light receiving elements 141; and first and second absolute light receiving elements 150D and 150U including a plurality of first and second absolute light receiving elements 151 and 152. A substrate 120 is provided, which is disposed opposite to the rotation disc 110.
