Heading F2K. [Also in Division H1] A solar photo-electric battery comprises supporting plates having photo-cells mounted on one side thereof and articulated to one another to serve as elements of a lazy-tong articulated linkage whereby the plates may be extended or contracted at will. In the specific embodiment an electric motor drives two racks by means of a pinion. These racks act on sectors whose motion extends the lazy-tongs. The links between the support plates have coil springs mounted on them to aid extension of the plates. The support plates are constructed in lamina form using two magnesium alloy plates and a middle member of foamed plastics, the middle member having portions cut away to aid cooling. Movement of the two racks is limited by an adjustable stop and a microswitch. The device may be incorporated in a satellite. |
