CARBON CATALYST AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION THEREOF, AND ELECTRODE AND BATTERY USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon catalyst having an improved catalytic activity, a process for producing the carbon catalyst, and an electrode and a battery using the same.

SOLUTION: The carbon catalyst is produced by carbonizing a raw material comprising an organic material containing a nitrogen atom and a metal, wherein iron and/or cobalt and copper are contained as the metal. The carbon catalyst has a crystallinity degree of 41.0% or less as determined by an X-ray diffraction method, a (nitrogen atom)/(carbon atom) ratio of 0.7 or more as determined by an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and oxygen reduction onset potential of 0.774 V (vs. NHE) or more.
