<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which gives blue light emission having high luminance and light emitting efficiency, and a new nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative for providing the element. <P>SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element has an organic thin film layer which is composed of one layer or a plurality of layers including at least a light emitting layer and which is interposed between a cathode and an anode.
