The intensity of the lateral electric field is enhanced and a reduction of the contrast ratio is suppressed. A liquid crystal display device is provided in which a first substrate and a second substrate with a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a blue phase provided therebetween; a transistor, a first pixel electrode, and a first common electrode which are provided over the first substrate; and a second pixel electrode and a second common electrode which are provided on the second substrate are provided.
