<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a read part from being read by an image reading section in a state where the image reading section reading the image of a document is not facing the read part which is read by the image reading section. <P>SOLUTION: When a determination is made, in a step 102, that a document feeder 10 is open, initial operation in a black-and-white mode and initial operation in a color mode are omitted and the control goes to the processing in a step 105. When a determination is made subsequently, in the step 105, that a control signal designating a start of image reading is received and a determination is made, in a step 106, that reading of images on both sides of a document is designated, transport of the document is started (a step 107).
