A frequency tunable mode locked laser diode and a method of tuning frequency in a mode locked laser diode

A tunable mode locked laser diode wherein a first section (11) is made of an active material and is configured to provide gain for laser emission by the diode. A second section (13) made of a strained passive material is used in the laser diode structure in order to tune the frequency of said laser emission in response to a bias current injected to the second section. A method for tuning frequency in a mode locked laser diode is also disclosed.
