A moulded article is made by the polymerization and curing, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and at temperatures of 50 DEG to 150 DEG C., of mixtures comprising an ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and 5 to 25% by weight of a halogen- and phosphorus-containing substance produced by reaction of a halogen-containing ester of H3PO3 with P2O5. The monomer, e.g. methyl, ethyl, butyl, glycol or allyl (meth) acrylate, optionally mixed with e.g. butadiene, styrene or divinyl benzene, may be used in the form of a monomer-polymer syrup with the flame-protection agent which preferably contains Cl or Br. A catalyst, e.g. a ,a 1 - azoisobutyrodinitrile, azobiscyclohexane nitrile, benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide or dicyclohexyl peroxide is included in the mixture. 0.1 to 1% of water or an aliphatic alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms may also be included. In the examples methyl methacrylate is polymerized in moulds in the presence of reaction products of tris(bromoethyl)phosphite with varying amounts of P2O5. The catalyst is azoisobutyrodinitrile and stearic acid is included in the mixture. The mouldings are cured.
|
