[Also in Divisions B3 and B8] A sheet (46), Fig. 7, of metal foil is embossed by means of upper and lower dies 47, 48 respectively, to form a receptacle (32), Fig. 4, having a flange strengthened by a peripheral channel and bead (39). Members 67 and 90 of the lower die are fixed. The upper die 47 is lowered, taking with it rings 77, 71 and 86 of the lower die, and cutting out a circular blank as an upper ring 63 passes the ring 90. Ring 54 of the upper die and ring 71 of the lower die are halted by the shoulder 75 of member 67. After further movement, the ring 77 is arrested by a shoulder 79 of the now stationary ring 71, the ring 54 being moved relative to upper die member 49 against the action of a spring (61), Fig. 9, thus forming the channel in the receptacle flange. The ring 63 continues down with the lower ring 86 thereby drawing the foil into co-operating bead-forming portions of these members. The rings 63 and 86 then rise, by fluid pressure acting on the ring 86, to complete the bead (39). The die member 49 is also raised, the ring 54 being temporarily held by the stepped part (42), Fig. 11, of the receptacle, against the action of the spring (61). The lower die members are halted when a flange 72 on the ring 71 engages a shoulder 74 on the fixed member 67. Thereafter, the upper die member 49 and ring 63 rise from the lower die, enabling the spring (61) to act on the ring 54 to eject the finished receptacle.</p> |
