<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator that offers a loop-back circuit of an optical waveguide with a reduced size and low light loss, achieves a small type low loss element, and improves mechanical reliability. <P>SOLUTION: An optical modulator includes an LN modulator made of a lithium niobate material and a first and a second PLCs that are made of a glass material and are butt-connected to the LN modulator for input-output of the optical signal to the LN modulator. The optical waveguide circuit of the first PLC connects at least two fibers connected to one end face via a fiber block with the optical waveguide of the LN modulator butt-connected to the other end face. The optical waveguide circuit of the second PLC is a folded optical waveguide that connects the optical waveguides of the LN modulator butt-connected to one end face to each other. The folded optical waveguide is formed in a semiconductor optical waveguide circuit implemented on the second PLC. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
