The operating device has a trough-shaped receptacle that includes a concave surface (14). A separate control element (24) is detachedly positioned in receptacle for adjusting the operating conditions of household appliance. The control element is freely rotatable and movable with respect to receptacle. The visual display regions (21,22) are arranged adjacent to receptacle, at upper side. One element among several functional elements is selected according to rotational movement of control element and the selected function of appliance is optically displayed. An independent claim is included for domestic cooking appliance.
