Provided are: a non-asbestos friction material composition that can render a friction material having a low environmental impact compared to conventional products, a superior coefficient of friction, and superior cracking resistance and wear resistance. The non-asbestos friction material composition contains a binder, an organic filler, an inorganic filler, and a fibrous base material; the amount of copper contained in the friction material composition is no greater than 5 mass% in terms of the element copper; the amount of metal fibers contained that are not copper or a copper alloy is no greater than 0.5 mass%; 1.5-4.5 mass% of cashew dust is contained as the organic filler; 30-45 mass% of zirconium oxide having a particle size of no greater than 30 µm is contained as the inorganic filler; and zirconium oxide having a particle size exceeding 30 µm is not contained.
