<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for igniting a combustor. <P>SOLUTION: An ignition system for a combustor includes an access port 24 through a wall of the combustor and a laser outside the combustor and aligned with the access port 24 to generate a beam 28 along a path. A lens 38 in the path of the beam 28 focuses the beam 28 at a focal point 30 inside the combustor, and a shutter 40 has a first position in the path and a second position out of the path. The method for igniting the combustor includes the steps of generating the beam 28 along the path, focusing the beam 28 on the focal point 30 inside the combustor, and moving a shutter 40 from the first position in the path to the second position outside of the path. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
