The fan has a running wheel (9) driven by a fan motor and rotatably mounted at an axle (21). Plate-like separation disks (22) are arranged between fan blades (20) of the running wheel. The disks are axially mounted at the axle. An outer contour of each disk is adapted to an outer contour of each fan blade so that flow of suction medium is prevented. The separation disks are rotationally and fixedly fastened at a bearing sleeve, which is connected with the axle in form-fit manner. The separation disks and the bearing sleeve are integrally designed. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a radial fan.
