A brake disc comprising a core layer 110 and a wear layer 102a & 102b, the core layer 110 having a face and an external periphery, the wear layer 102a & 102b being attached to the face, wherein the core layer comprises a C-C or refractory carbide first material and a plurality of distinct regions of a second material 210, the second material having a specific heat capacity and/or a volumetric specific heat capacity higher than the specific heat capacity and/or a volumetric specific heat capacity of the first material. The disc may be a ventilated disc having at least one flow passageway 106 lined with the second material 112. The second material being one or more of boron, beryllium or compounds of boron, beryllium and/or lithium or BN, Li2O or LiAlO2.
