The device (1) has an electro-mechanical switch which selects an assigned operating function of medical apparatus. A proximity switch permits selecting of assigned operating function of electro-mechanical switch. The proximity switch is provided with detection space for detecting presence of operating object. The electro-mechanical switch is arranged in detection space of proximity switch. An independent claim is included for the method for operating switching device.
