The present invention relates to a method and system of recovering petroleum-like hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon-containing samples wherein a modifying additive, such as a hydrocarbon, is added to an accompanying gas to form bubbles that are highly suitable for separating bitumen/oil from the hydrocarbon-containing sample using aqueous-based separation techniques.
