FIELD: chemistry. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical industry. The method of reducing content of formaldehyde in a gas involves reaction of the gas with a basic oxidising solution whose pH ranges from about 9.0 to about 10.5, containing H2O2 a metal cation. The metal cation is selected from a group comprising Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Mn2, Ti4+, Cr3+, Ce3+, Zn2+, Pd2+, Mo6+ and mixture thereof. Concentration of H2O2 in said solution is equal to at least 10 ppm. The reaction results in a gas with low content of formaldehyde and a solution containing formic acid. The aqueous oxidising solution further contains a complexing agent selected from a group consisting of diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid, nitriloacetic acid, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate and mixtures thereof. Concentration of said complexing agent ranges from about 2 ppm to about 2500 ppm. The aqueous oxidising solution further contains a base. ^ EFFECT: invention enables to efficiently reduce content of formaldehyde in a gas using an ecologically clean, simple method which does not require big expenses, without releasing a considerable amount of smog precursors. ^ 32 cl, 3 dwg, 2 ex |
