A composite contact element comprising a contact working face and a contact body portion is made by feeding two wires 17, 18 along guides 19, 20 into opposition in aligned grooves 14-16 in three concentric rigidly connected rings 11- 13. The wires abut arcuate stops 21, 22 and a portion 24, 26 of each wire is severed from the supply by shear blades 23, 25 respectively as the rings rotate anticlockwise in unison. The portions are retained in the grooves by arcuate guides 27-30 and their adjacent edges are abraded by the guides 28, 29 to facilitate the formation of a molecular bond at station B. The portions 24, 26 are forced together by plungers 31, 32 in the tapered groove 15 to form a molecular bond therebetween. The contact element formed can then be either ejected from the groove 15 or moved to a station C where the portions 24, 26 are electrically welded together and then ejected. The welding station C can be after or in lieu of station B. The contact body portion is preferably made of copper, nickel, iron or aluminium or alloys of copper or iron and the contact working face of gold, silver, platinum, palladium or alloys of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, ruthenium or iridium, If desired the plunger (33) may shape the contact working face, Fig. 6 (not shown). The apparatus may be modified for bonding three wires together. |
