In a spinneret plate for use in melt-spinning filaments of non-circular (lobed) cross-section the extrusion orifices each have a cross-section, taken in a plane parallel to the extrusion face, in the form of four branches radiating from the same point, each of the branches being substantially arcuate, as shown, for example, in Fig. 2, or consisting of two connected straight portions angled with respect to each other, as shown, for example, in Fig. 1. Each of the four branches may be substantially arcuate in form and the angles between the chords of adjacent arcuate branches may be equal. Each branch may consist of two connected straight portions angled with respect to each other and the angles between adjacent branches may be equal. The angle between the two straight portions in each branch may be from 15 to 150 degrees. At least two of the extrusion orifices may be similarly orientated or disorientated with respect to an imaginary straight line joining their centres. In the example polyethyleneterephthalate having an intrinsic viscosity of 0À68 is melt spun through a spinneret plate having 20 extrusion orifices each having the cross-section shown in Fig. 1. The temperature of the spinning head is maintained at 290‹ C., the wind-up speed is 300 m./min. and the unstretched filament denier is 300. |
