To bring about desulphurization of molten iron in the well of a cupola furnace there is injected below the surface a suspension of calcium carbide in an inert gas which may be nitrogen, argon, helium, chlorine or a mixture of nitrogen and chlorine. Preferably the gas flow is continuous, the carbide being added thereto intermittently. It is stated that the flow of gas removes dissolved gases from the iron and also modifies the graphite formation in the iron. Suitable apparatus is described and illustrated (see Division F4). |
