A nuclear reactor utilizing a combined liquid moderator and coolant has a core containing a symmetrical array of externally similar components, spaced apart to define liquid passages between them; most of the components are fuel bearing, but the remainder are empty of fuel, and include provision for filling their interiors with the liquid moderator. The fuel elements and dummies are of the elongate rod type and are made up into hexagonal section fuel assemblies each containing 37 components. The core is built up by close packing the hexagonal assemblies, a few of which are replaced by similar cross-section control rods. The object of the invention is to enable core layout details to be left flexible to as late a point as possible in the reactor development, thus enabling a fuel layout to be used of very nearly constant neutron flux. By using mixtures of fuel elements and dummies in each fuel assembly, flux is levelled by a flexible system of replacing fuel by moderator. |
