A self-propellable material compacting appliance is of elongated shape and has at least one rotary vibrator 40 rigidly mounted on a base plate 10, the rotary vibrator being mounted at the leading end of the appliance relative to its direction of movement. The rotary vibrator 40 is driven from a driving unit 3 which may be an internal combustion engine, electric motor or generator unit for electric motor individual drive, mounted on a platform 2 which is supported on the base plate 10 by springs 21. For movement of the appliance in the reverse direction, the drive to the vibrator 40 is declutched and a drive to a similar vibrator 4 located at the other end of the appliance is established. Alternatively, a single vibrator is mounted so that it may be swung from one end of the appliance to the other in order to reverse the direction of movement. A steering rod 20 is provided.
