The invention comprises condensation products of steroids having more than one carbonyl function with aminoguanidines of formula <FORM:1005650/C2/1> wherein A is a hydrogen atom or a direct link to an alkyl radical B, B is an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which may be connected to A, a nitro group or a group of formula <FORM:1005650/C2/2> wherein n is 0 to 8, f is 1 or 2 and R and R1 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms which may be connected, optionally by a hetero-atom, and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, and their preparation by reaction (a) of a steroid polyone with a substituted aminoguanidine or an acid addition salt thereof or (b) of a substituted thiosemicarbazone or S-alkyl-isothiosemicarbazone of a steroid polyone with an amine. The compounds of the invention have cardiotonic activity. 1 - (g - N1 - methylpiperazino - propyl) - 3 - amino -guanidine is prepared by reaction of g -(N1-methylpiperazino)-propylamine with N-amino-S-methyl -isothiourea hydroiodide.
