IMPROVED PROCESS FOR CONVERTING ALKANE TO UNSATURATED CARBOXYLIC ACID

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved process for converting alkane to an unsaturated carboxylic acid.

SOLUTION: A method for preparing an unsaturated carboxylic acid by the selective partial oxidation of an alkane includes the steps of: (i) reacting an alkane with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas such as air in the presence of a catalyst to prepare the product containing at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid and a certain concentration of a saturated carboxylic acid; and (ii) reducing the concentration of the impurities of a saturated carboxylic acid by reducing the selectivity of partial oxidation to a saturated carboxylic acid and breaking, converting or separating at least some of a saturated carboxylic acid.
