The device has a transport unit (2) for transportation of goods (1) on a conveyor belt (5). Optical image pickup units (3) are arranged with respect to the transport unit for receiving an image on the belt. A positioning unit (4) is associated to the belt for placing and aligning the image pickup units by the transport unit such that the goods in a side surface are provided at a distance (a1) to a longitudinal edge (11) of the belt and/or a distance (a2) to the image pickup units and/or a preferred orientation with respect to the longitudinal edge and/or the image pickup units. The conveyor belt is designed as a circulating endless belt. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting goods at a self-service checkout system.
