Heading C7N, A vehicle steel drive shaft is hardened by inductively surface heating the shaft 1 along its entire length whilst rotating about its axis, e.g. held between centres 4 under a linear inductor 2, whereby the whole surface becomes uniformly heated at the same time, and then overall quenching the heated shaft, e.g. by dropping it into a quenching bath to form martensite. The terminals 3 of the inductor are joined to a source of A.C. e.g. of frequency 10, 000 c/s.</p> |
