<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress PM emissions from a cylinder injection gasoline engine while minimizing the worsening of fuel efficiency, even during accelerating operation when air-fuel mixture in a cylinder is liable to become rich. <P>SOLUTION: In the cylinder injection gasoline engine, an exhaust valve closing timing is set to be earlier during accelerating operation to increase internal EGR and raise fuel injection pressure.
