Non-aqueous built liquid detergent compositions comprise (a) a liquid nonionic detergent having a molecular weight of 300-11,000 consisting of an ethylene oxide condensate with a hydrophobic organic compound, such as polyoxypropylene, an alkyl- or dialkyl-phenol in which the alkyl group contains 6-12 carbon atoms, the reaction product of propylene oxide with ethylene diamine, sorbitan fatty acid esters, or a C8- 18-aliphatic alcohol, and (b) an anhydrous hydrolysable polyphosphate, preferably sodium or potassium pyro- or tripolyphosphate, in colloidal suspension in (a), the weight ratio (a) to (b) being 99: 1 to 1: 2, preferably 1 : 1 to 1 : 2. The compositions may be obtained by suspending (b) in hydrated form in a vehicle consisting of a C2- 4-glycol, glycerol, octanol-1 or monoethanolamine or mixtures thereof and then first distilling off the water of crystallization at 70-180 DEG F. and 5 mm. Hg to atmospheric pressure with stirring, and thereafter, when all the water has been removed, distilling off the vehicle at 70-400 DEG F. and 0.1 mm. Hg to atmospheric pressure, preferably at such a pressure that the distillation takes place at 140-220 DEG F. If preferred the dehydration of the polyphosphate may be performed before the nonionic detergent is added. Sodium silicate, carboxymethylcellulose, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, polyethylene glycol, benzotriazole, ethylene thiourea, ethanol, perfume and fluorescent dyes may also be included.ALSO:Colloidal sodium tripolyphosphate and pyrophosphate is prepared by suspending hydrated sodium tripolyphosphate in a glycol, glycerin or higher alcohol solvent (as dehydrating vehicle), feeding the suspension to a reaction zone maintained at 70-180 DEG F. under an absolute pressure of 5 mm. of mercury-one atmosphere-and removing the colloidal precipitate (see U.S.A. Specification 2,940,938).
|
