Histidine containing peptides are prepared by condensing a histidine or a histidine-containing peptide, having a free amino group or a free carboxy group with an amino acid, or a peptide, having a free carboxy group or a free amino group respectively, the histidine or histidine containing peptide having its imino group protected by a 2,2,2-trihalogeno-1-acylamino ethyl group, and, if desired, removing all or some of any protective groups present in the resulting peptide. Histidines or peptides containing them are protected by reaction with an N - acyl - 1 - trihalogeno - acetaldimine which may be formed in situ by reaction of the compound where R,R1 and R11, of which any two orall three may be identical, each represents F, Cl or Br, Y represents Cl, Br, SO 2 , Alkyl, NHCONHAlkyl-SO 2 -, or -N 3 and Ac represents acyl, and a base. Medicaments contain the protected histidine peptides prepared by the above process.
