A water-soluble acid anhydride is mixed with an aqs. latex of a polymer. The latex contains, as emulsifier (I), the salt of an organic acid having a lower ionisation const. than that of the acid of the anhydride. The mixture is allowed to stand still for a period which is long enough to hydrolyse the acid anhydride and cause polymer particle agglomeration, and the latex of the agglomerated polymer particles stabilised with emulsifier (II) before subjecting it to any movement. Particle size of the agglomerate can be controlled by adjusting reaction conditions. The agglomerates are stable and can be subjected to graft polymerisation. |
