1,206,367. Turret lathes. A. MONFORTS. 29 April, 1968 [29 April, 1967], No. 20299/68. Headings B3B and B3T. A lathe comprises a main spindle 2 to which a workholder such as a chuck 4 can be connected and an indexable tool-holding member such as a capstan 6 mounted on a spindle 3 the axis of which is parallel to the main spindle, the spindles being positioned one above the other. The capstan is indexed to bring successive tools into alignment with a chuck on the main spindle and is axially displaceable with its spindle to bring the tools successively into machining engagement with a workpiece held in the chuck. A plurality of chucks 2, 7, are mounted on a slide member 8 movable transversely of the spindle axis and aligned therewith so that each chuck can be brought successively into driving engagement with the main spindle 2, by way of a spring-actuated dog-clutch 10, 11. Alternatively, the chucks may be mounted on an indexable turret 24 for successive engagement with the main spindle. In each embodiment described the chucks not in driving engagement with the main spindle permit loading and unloading of workpieces therein during the indexing cycle of the turret or the traverse of the slide, effecting transfer of the workpieces to and from the machining station. |
