A cartridge magazine for a gun comprises one or more compartments for cartridges to be located in a vertical row one above the other with their longitudinal axes extending substantially horizontally, each compartment having an opening at its lower end through which cartridges are fed by gravity to a conveying path 19 extending below each compartment in a substantially horizontal direction. A cartridge feed-control mechanism is associated with at least one of the compartments and includes a retaining means 6 which comprises two arms 8 secured to and pivotable with a shaft, the arms being urged into the path of a cartridge 5a by a torain spring 9 (Figs. 1, 2). At the outer ends of the arms 8 are cams 33 which co-operate with abutments 34 of further arms 30, the cam-abutment co-operation together with the inner end of the arm 30 engaging the cartridge 5a in the retained position supports a further cartridge 5c in the compartment. The shaft 7 is further provided with a retaining member 10 secured thereto and co-operating with a dent 13 of a second, pivoted retaining member 12. A pin 15 works in a slot 17 of a spring-loaded, pivoted linkage 16, 22, 29, 30 which is actuated by a feeler 18. A cartridge falling on the feeler 18 depresses it to actuate the linkage and lock the retaining members 10, 12 together to secure the arms 8, 30 in their cartridge retaining position until the cartridge moves away from the feeler. Cartridges moving from an adjacent compartment under the compartment described above causes the feeler 18 to oscillate due to the cylindrical nature of the cartridge. This oscillation, however, is taken up by the slot 17 in the linkage and not until the space below the compartment is entirely free from a cartridge or a portion thereof can a cartridge be fed from the compartment by the raising of feeler 18 to its fully spring-loaded free position with the subsequent freeing of the retaining members 10, 12 and arms 8, 30. |
