<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight module and a liquid crystal display for improving a utilization ratio with respect to light energy. <P>SOLUTION: Disclosed is a backlight module including: a backlight; a light guide plate; and a polarization light flux division prism and an optical converter installed between the backlight and the light guide plate. The polarization light flux division prism is configured to divide the rays of light from the backlight into first polarization and second polarization vertical to an oscillating direction, and the optical converter is configured to convert the oscillating direction of the second polarization into the oscillating direction of the first polarization, and to reflect the first polarization or the converted second polarization to the light guide plate.
