The present invention relates to the use of process residue from the production of titanium dioxide by the sulphate process as a photocatalytically active substance, for example in building materials and/or structural components, such as, e.g., concrete structural components, and also a photocatalytically active substance which comprises process residue and cement, to structural components and building materials which contain said photocatalytic substance and to a method for producing said photocatalytically active substance.
