<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tension device for a tire chain, which permits looseness while tension of a level in the tire chain is maintained and can be firmly mounted. <P>SOLUTION: In the tension device for the tire chain, a winding reel 3 is supported so that it can rotate about its axis inside the housing 2, is prestressed in the winding direction and has a ring gear 31 with teeth 33 arranged along its circumference. A tension cable 10 that can be retracted into the housing can be connected to the winding reel 3, and a locking ratchet 6 is engaged with the teeth 33 in a first position A to block a rotational movement of the winding reel in the tension direction.
