The internal combustion engine (10) has multiple cylinder groups (11,12) with multiple cylinders (13) and multiple exhaust gas turbochargers (14,15), where the exhaust gas of the former exhaust gas turbocharger is supplied by the exhaust valves (20) of the cylinder of the former cylinder group over an exhaust manifold (22) of the former cylinder group. The exhaust manifold and another exhaust manifold (23) of the cylinder groups are coupled with each other.
