Lactams are polymerized by alkaline polymerization using a catalyst system comprising an alkali metal or strongly basic alkali metal compound, a compound capable of introducing imido-groups into the system as activator and as a third component a phenol in an amount smaller than the equivalent of the alkali metal present. The basic compound may be sodium caprolactam, the activator, N-acetyl caprolactam, N-benzoyl caprolactam, N-benzoyl pyrrolidone or tetra-acetyl hexamethylene diamine and the phenol p-tert-butoxy-phenol. |
