1,191,397. Inosine. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO. Ltd. 8 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 6268/68. Heading C2C. A process for producing inosine by fermentation comprises culturing a hydrocarbon-assimilating micro-organism capable of producing inosine under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing at least one hydrocarbon as the main carbon source, accumulating inosine in the resultant culture liquor, and recovering the inosine therefrom. Suitable hydrocarbons are aliphatic hydrocarbons having from 10-25 carbon atoms, especially n-paraffins (12-18 carbon atoms) and kerosene, crude light and heavy oils. Other hydrocarbons may be used. The micro-organism may be Rrevibacterium ketoglutamicum, Arthrobacter paraffineus, or Corynebacterium hydrocarboclastus. The culturing is preferably carried out at a temperature of 25-12‹ C. and a pH of 6-8. A synthetic culture medium or a natural nutrient medium may be employed which contain a nitrogen source, an optional carbohydrate carbon source in smaller amounts than the hydrocarbon source, and inorganic compounds such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium salts.
