A thermoplastic imaging member carrying a deformation pattern composed of a periodic carrier pattern amplitude modulated by an image to be reproduced is viewed by passing a parallel beam of coherent light through the deformation pattern and demodulating the image signal from the carrier in the projected beam by spatial filtering. As shown in Fig. 2 a beam from a laser 28 at a calculated angle to the optical axis of the viewing system is passed through a deformation pattern 31 on a thermoplastic web 17, and the beam produced is demodulated by forming Frauhoffer diffraction spectra using a lens 33 and filtering off all but one of the diffraction spectra using an apertured screen 34 or a small mirror (not shown), and focused by a lens 35 on to a screen 36. The deformation image may be produced by forming an electrostatic image on the thermoplastic imaging member and softening the member by heat or solvent to form the deformation image, which is fixed by cooling. The electrostatic image may be produced by transfer, by using a modulated electron beam or electrical discharge, or by using a thermoplastic layer which contains or is bonded to, a photo-conductor which is uniformly electrostatically charged and simultaneously or sequentially exposed to an optical image of a screen (to form the carrier pattern) and an optical image to be reproduced. |
