The method involves detecting and storing a lateral value chart, signal characteristics, input variables and input circuits. The stored value chart and the input variables are supplied to corresponding inputs. The stored circuits are provided to a component (21) e.g. software module, functional component, subprogram or program organization unit, at an input side. Debugging is performed, and data stream supplied to the component is supplied with respective interruptions. The circuits are determined based on the input variables and/or lateral characteristics of the input variables. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for detecting cause of unexpected characteristics of processes of a plant.
