An Oxo synthesis is effected using as feed a crude mixture of alkenes containing dienes such as cracked paraffin wax-containing mineral oil residues, which mixture is first treated with sulphuric, naphthalene sulphonic or phosphoric acid, aluminium or zinc chloride, natural or synthetic clay, silica gel or bauxite to remove easily-polymerizable constituents until the content of alkyl-2-alkenes-1 is at most about 1 per cent. A preferred feed mixture has a maleic anhydride value of 1-3 and a monoalkene content of more than 50 per cent. The treatment generally leaves at least 75 per cent of the original mixture for use as feed. The Oxo aldehydes produced yield alcohols which give good plasticizers. In examples, a C6-C8 alkene fraction from the cracking of paraffin wax is treated for 15 minutes with 98 per cent sulphuric acid, the upper layer treated with 2 per cent caustic soda and distilled or the fraction subjected at various rates of throughout to the action of fuller's earth at 200 DEG C. and 20 atmospheres.
