[Also in Division C5] A synergistic biocidal mixture finding application as a disinfectant, preservative, algaecide, fungicide and viricide comprises (a) a surface active amine and/or surface active amino acid and (b) a 2-alkylamino-6-aminopyridine of formula: wherein R<SP>5</SP> is C 8-18 alkyl or chloro- or bromosubstituted benzyl. Specified pyridine derivatives are those wherein R<SP>5</SP> is octyl, decyl, lauryl, myristyl, stearyl, p-chlorobenzyl and o-chlorobenzyl. The surface active component (a) may be of formula or wherein R<SP>1</SP> is C 8-18 alkyl wherein the chain may be interrupted by -O-, -NH- or -CNH-; R<SP>2</SP> is H, -CH 3 or -CH 2 CH 2 OH; O R<SP>3</SP> is H, -CH 3 , -CH 2 CH 2 OH, -(CH 2 CH 2 NR<SP>2</SP> 2 ), -(CH 2 CH 2 NR<SP>2</SP>) m R<SP>2</SP> or -(CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NR<SP>2</SP>) m R<SP>2</SP>, wherein R<SP>2</SP> is as specified above and m is 1 or 2; and R<SP>4</SP> is -CH 2 COOH, CH 3 CH | COOH, CH 3 CHCH 2 COOH, -CH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 COOH, -CH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 COOH,- CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 COOH, -CH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHCH(CH 3 )COOH or -CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NHCH(CH 3 )CH 2 COOH. Mixtures of amines and amino acids may be used, e.g. those obtained by reaction of the amines in a mole ratio of >1:1 with chloroacetic acid, alphachloropropionic acid or crotonic acid. In examples, components (a) are: the reaction product of N-lauryldiethylene-triamine and N- lauryl propylenediamine with chloroacetic acid, the reaction product of N-lauryl propylene diamine and chloroacetic acid, N-lauryl- N',N' - dimethylpropylenediamine, N,N - bis - hydroxyethyl - laurylamine, N - coconutalkyl - propylenediamino acetic acid and N - coconutalkyl - propylenediamino - # - butyric acid. The mixtures may be used in solution in water, propyl alcohol, ethyl glycol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dioxane or glycol dimethyl ether. |
