A method for detecting a defect of an acceleration sensor for vehicle is provided to detect an offset error of a longitudinal acceleration sensor irrespective of a decelerating state and an accelerating state of a vehicle. A defect detection method includes a process for determining a defect of a longitudinal acceleration sensor according to a signal received from a sensor installed in a vehicle. An estimation process is performed to estimate a vehicle speed. A determination process is performed to determine whether the vehicle speed is in a normal state during a predetermined time(B4). An acceleration estimation process is performed to estimate a vehicle acceleration when the vehicle speed is in the normal state. An offset defect is determined when a difference between the estimated acceleration and an output value of the longitudinal acceleration sensor is more than an offset error value during a predetermined time(B6-B7).
