1,215,093. Preventing polymer discoloration. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 13 Feb., 1968, No. 7042/68. Heading C3P. A method of maintaining the achromic character of polymers of alkenes, alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbons and halogen substituted derivatives thereof having incorporated therein metal ion-containing compounds having a propensity to discolour the polymers comprises adsorbing the metal ion-containing compound on the surface of an inorganic mineral adsorbent prior to its incorporation in the polymer. Adsorp - tion may be effected by dispersing the adsorbent in a solution of the metal compound, separating and drying. The polymer may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butene, 3-methylbutene-1, 4.methylpentene-1, styrene or alkyl- or halosubstituted styrenes. The adsorbent may be montmorillonite, bentonite, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, fuller's earth, talc, zeolites, molecular sieves or titanium dioxide. The metal compound may be of nickel, vanadium, cobalt or ferric iron. In examples fibres are spun from polypropylene containing (1) the nickel phenolate of bis(p-t.-octylphenol)monosulphide and (2) the n-butylamine complex thereof, adsorbed on bentonite. |
